Advertisement Why is the ACT Government trying to dodge electrical safety laws on the Light Rail? Dear ACT Government; ACT Chief Minister, You can't build Canberra's future by putting safety in the past. Your plan to exempt Stage Two of the Canberra Light Rail from the Electrical Safety Act is reckless and dangerous. Electrical safety laws exist for one reason - to protect workers, commuters and the community. They were written after hard lessons and real tragedies. Trying to sidestep those laws - at the request of big business - puts lives at risk. It's a shortcut no responsible government should take. And it won't even speed things up. Cutting safety corners now will only cause more construction delays, more cost blowouts, and more frustration for local businesses and communities - the same people who endured the chaos of Stage One. When safety gets watered down, projects get slowed down - and people get hurt. The ACT Government must apply the full Electrical Safety Act to the Light Rail project. No exemptions. No shortcuts. No excuses. We all know Stage One was a debacle. Now, Stage Two is shaping up to be even worse. Canberrans deserve a world-class transport system - built safely, by qualified, skilled electrical workers, under the protections of the law. Safety isn't negotiable.
